📌 Update – May 2026: Expo 2025 Osaka has now closed. But the lamington lives on! The recipe has been carried forward by the very barista who supervised the Australia Pavilion cafe. Scroll down to find out where to enjoy it in Japan today. 🇦🇺

You can easily enjoy fish & chips, lamington cake, and a local favorite coffee known as flat white.

In May, I enjoyed fish & chips, meat pie, and a flat white!

Fish and chips and flat white at the Australian Pavilion

The fish & chips I had in May at the Australia Pavilion (¥1,800) were so delicious, they made me want to try the UK Pavilion’s version as well!

Of course, the drink was a flat white—a coffee born in the Southern Hemisphere, made with espresso and steamed milk. It’s a favorite in cafes across Australia and New Zealand.

I also had the Aussie meat pie (¥850). It tasted just like the ones I had during my travels there!

The lamington cake was sold out…

But I couldn’t stop thinking about the lamington cake, a classic treat back home. Ever since then, I kept checking for it every time I passed by.

Unfortunately, since I often stopped by in the evening, it was usually sold out. I’d find myself thinking, “Probably gone again today…” and still checking every time, just in case.

I really wanted to try a real lamington at the Expo!

Lamington cake originated in Australia and is beloved nationwide. It’s a true national sweet!

And finally…

I found it today! No hesitation—I bought it right away for ¥600. The remaining quantity wasn’t displayed, so if you see it, line up fast!

I peeked inside the bag…
Unwrapped it…
Broke it open and—

Lamington cake is a square sponge cake coated in chocolate sauce and rolled in shredded coconut. This one had a layer of strawberry jam in the middle.

When paired with a flat white (R size ¥550 / L size ¥650), it becomes a full Oceania experience. The latte art and the cup design were both stylish, too!

The portion was just right—perfect for when you want a little something sweet.

Love flat white? Try making it at home!

A handheld milk frother lets you create that creamy, velvety texture — just like the flat white at the Australia Pavilion. HARIO is a beloved Japanese coffee brand, well known among coffee lovers worldwide.

Note: Drinks and food are served from different spots

Follow the staff’s instructions at checkout.

When you order, drinks are picked up near the pavilion entrance (you wait there), while food is handed over at a different station near where you ordered. If you’re with friends, splitting up the line makes it easier to collect everything efficiently.

Final thoughts: A taste of everyday Australia

The sweetness of the lamington, the aroma of the coffee, the hot and crispy fish & chips—each one gave me a sense of daily life in Australia.

The real charm of the Australia Pavilion isn’t just “good food.” It’s the chance to feel the warmth of ordinary life from the other side of the world.

Plus, the Japanese staff were so kind and attentive. They explained everything patiently—especially helpful for seniors like me!

Side note: A little geo-background

Australia was once a British colony, which is why the Union Jack appears on its national flag and why fish & chips are such a common sight.

Although it’s the world’s smallest continent, Australia spans about 7.69 million km²—roughly 20 times the size of Japan and about 3.5 times larger than Greenland.

Its population is around 27.2 million, about one-fifth of Japan’s 124 million (2024, Australian Bureau of Statistics).

Population density? Australia has just 3 people per km². In contrast, Japan’s density is about 344 per km². Quite a difference! (Data from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

Have a nice trip! (^^)/
