From the moment we joined the queue outside 58 Diner in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, to the last bite of my Neo Classic Burger, the whole experience was just fun. There’s even a little illustrated guide on how to eat the thing. Worth every minute of the wait.

Planning a trip to Kyoto?
Daiwa Roynet Hotel Kyoto Ekimae PREMIER is just a 4-minute walk from Kyoto Station — a perfect base for exploring Higashiyama and beyond.

🍔 58 DDINER — A Popular Spot Near Miyakomesse

We were heading to Miyakomesse (Kyoto Municipal Industrial Exhibition Hall) and started looking for lunch nearby. That’s when we spotted 58DINER, an American-style hamburger shop in the Okazaki area near Heian Shrine.

When we arrived, there were already people waiting outside. We waited about 15 minutes before getting in. If you plan ahead, you can make a reservation in advance through HotPepper, and the restaurant also accepts phone reservations.

We were shown to the second floor. Both floors were almost full — a sure sign of a popular place.

🧀 What We Ordered

BurgerContentsPrice (dine-in)
58 CheeseburgerBBQ sauce, Kraft bacon, tomato, lettuce, onion¥1,270
Neo Classic BurgerTartar sauce, red cabbage, fries, onions, dill¥1,200

I chose the Neo Classic Burger — I’d had a big breakfast that morning and wanted something a little lighter.

Staying near Kyoto Station makes it easy to access 58 DINER — just 20 minutes by subway to Higashiyama Station, then a short 5-minute walk. We recommend the Daiwa Roynet Hotel Kyoto Ekimae PREMIER for a comfortable stay.

📋 How to Eat a Giant Burger — They Explain It

This was a first for me: illustrated instructions on how to eat the burger, propped up right by the table. I genuinely needed them.

  1. When your burger arrives, grab the hamburger paper from the napkin stand
  2. Open the paper and wrap it firmly around the burger with both hands
  3. Once it’s secure in the paper, remove the skewer pick
  4. Dig in!

It worked perfectly. I managed to eat the whole thing without it falling apart — which, for a burger this size, felt like a small victory.

😋 The Taste: Worth Every Minute of the Wait

There’s a reason this burger tastes different. The buns are baked fresh every morning in-house. The patty is made from beef only — no fillers, no breadcrumbs, no egg. And the sauces are all house-made from scratch. You can taste the care in every bite.

The patty edges were crispy, the inside was juicy and chewy, and the meat flavour was outstanding. This is not fast food — this is a burger made with care.

  • The fries — thin, crispy, great with ketchup or hot sauce
  • The coleslaw — saltier than expected, but in the best way. It balanced everything perfectly
  • The Neo Classic — cohesive flavours, vegetables that didn’t overpower, and surprisingly easy on the stomach

After eating, I didn’t feel heavy or uncomfortable — something I can’t always say about burgers back home. I’d go back in a heartbeat.
