Last spring, I celebrated my Kanreki (60th birthday—a significant milestone in Japan representing a return to one’s beginnings). To mark this new chapter, I embarked on a journey of “rebirth” to Kumano with my husband.

Why Visit Hayatama Taisha in Spring?

While the Kumano Kodo is often associated with deep, mossy green forests and rugged stone paths (like the Daimon-zaka slope leading to Nachi Taisha), Hayatama Taisha offers a completely different atmosphere.

Located near the mouth of the Kumano River, it is bright, open, and welcoming. The contrast between the vivid vermilion-lacquered shrine buildings and the deep green of the background mountains is stunning.

In spring (late March to early April), cherry blossoms bloom across the grounds, making the scenery even more spectacular. It feels like stepping into a vivid picture scroll of ancient Japan.

The three Kumano shrines each have a specific spiritual significance related to time:

• Kumano Hongu Taisha: Salvation in the Past life.
• Kumano Hayatama Taisha: Blessings in the Present life.
• Kumano Nachi Taisha: Salvation in the Future life.

By visiting all three, it is said that you can purify your past, receive vitality for the present, and secure peace for the future. This entire process is called “Yomigaeri” (Rebirth).

Hayatama Taisha is the place to pray for energy and happiness in your current life. It’s the perfect spot to visit when you want to refresh your spirit and make a fresh start.

Must-See Spots Within the Shrine

The Sacred Nagi Tree (御神木ナギ)

As soon as you enter the torii gate, you will see a massive, overwhelming tree on your right. This is the sacred Nagi tree, estimated to be 1,000 years old.

It is said to have been planted by Taira no Shigemori (the eldest son of the famous samurai leader Taira no Kiyomori) in the 12th century to pray for the prosperity of his clan.

The leaves of the Nagi tree are uniquely strong—you cannot easily tear them by hand because their veins run vertically parallel. For this reason, Nagi leaves have long been cherished as charms for “strong relationships” (en-musubi) and “safe travels.” Pilgrims in the past would tuck these leaves into their sleeves or kasa hats as protective amulets.

The Main Shrine Buildings (Shaden)

The current shrine buildings were rebuilt in the 1950s. The dazzling vermilion color represents the vitality of the sun and life itself. Standing before these bright buildings gives you a surge of positive energy.

Access and Practical Tips

Hayatama Taisha is located in Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture. It is relatively easy to access compared to other parts of Kumano.

• By Train: About a 15-minute walk or a short taxi ride from JR Shingu Station (accessible via the JR Kuroshio Limited Express from Osaka/Kyoto, or the JR Nanki Limited Express from Nagoya).

• By Car: There is a free parking lot right next to the shrine.
